Electron Cross-Field Transport in a Low Power Cylindrical Hall Thruster
نویسنده
چکیده
Conventional annular Hall thrusters become inefficient when scaled to low power. Cylindrical Hall thrusters, which have lower surface-to-volume ratio, are therefore more promising for scaling down. They presently exhibit performance comparable with conventional annular Hall thrusters. Electron cross-field transport in a 2.6 cm miniaturized cylindrical Hall thruster (100 W power level) has been studied through the analysis of experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations of electron dynamics in the thruster channel. The numerical model takes into account elastic and inelastic electron collisions with atoms, electron-wall collisions, including secondary electron emission, and Bohm diffusion. We show that in order to explain the observed discharge current, the electron anomalous collision frequency νB has to be on the order of the Bohm value, νB≈ωc/16. The contribution of electron-wall collisions to cross-field transport is found to be insignificant.

On the role of fluctuations, cathode placement, and collisions on the transport of electrons in the near-field of Hall thrusters
The performance of Hall thrusters can be highly sensitive to the position and operational parameters of the external cathode, hinting that the electron transport in the near-field is strongly dependent on the emitted electrons’ initial properties. In addition, the plasma plumes of Hall discharges often exhibit fluctuations which are expected to alter electron trajectories. By implementing recen...

متن کاملA Kinetic Study of Electron-Wall Collisions in a Hall Thruster
The role of electron-wall collisions in Hall thruster operation is studied through simulation of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) inside the thruster channel. The electron Boltzmann equation is solved using the “local-field” approximation, using experimental results as input data. The equation takes into account inelastic losses due to ionizing collisions and wall-collisions, as...
متن کاملBismuth Hall Thruster I: Simulation-suggested Design and Performance
A two-dimensional radial-axial hybrid simulation of the xenon-fueled Stanford Hall Thruster has been adapted to model a bismuth-fed thruster with varying channel geometry. The simulation treats the electrons as a quasi-one-dimensional fluid and the neutrals and ions as discrete superparticles advanced using a particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. Since experimental data of the electron cross-field m...

Despite some advancements in the field, Hall thrusters are still typically simulated using quasi-1D codes that assume thermalized potential along magnetic field lines and an analytical model for the cross-field mobility. In this paper, we develop methodology and present results from a Hall thruster simulation which diverges from this approach in two important aspects. First, a two-dimensional m...
